Why is it important to groom your pet?

Grooming your pet is important for maintaining your pet's physical health and appearance. It is very important to start grooming when your pet is very young or else they may not allow it as they get older. Your pet needs to be comfortable being touched and groomed in areas such as ears and teeth. Playing with your pets ears, mouth, and paws at a young age is very beneficial to getting them to be comfortable with any type of grooming. This early exposure will also help your pet feel comfortable with other groomers if you do not want to keep up with the maintenance yourself.

Brushing your pet's fur is necessary to remove dead hair, dirt, and dandruff, and to keep your pet's fur looking healthy and clean and not greasy. For dogs or cats with long hair, the fur can easily become matted, and therefore should be brushed at least once a week. Brushing can also help discover skin problems such as ticks, fleas, and dry skin. It is very important to groom and inspect your pet for these abnormalities during tick season and if your pet spends a lot of time outdoors.

Bathing your pet is necessary if they spend a lot of time outdoors, enjoy rolling in the grass or mud, or interact with other animals a lot. Typically, cats remain indoors most of their life and do not need to worry about receiving baths. Giving a cat a bath actually results in a lot of stress on the animal since they do not enjoy it. Bathing is really only necessary for dogs. Especially if you have a breed that enjoys the outdoors. Dogs will roll around on the ground and if they play with other dogs, drool will easily get caught in their fur. To keep your dog's coat looking, feeling, and smelling fresh, regular baths should be given to your dog.

Cutting your pet's nails and keeping them generally short is also very important. Long nails can cause pain, infection, and other issues. However, cutting the nails too short can also cause bleeding in your pet's nails. If you are worried about cutting your pet's nails, allow a groomer at Astoria Grooming to get the job done. This avoids any mistakes that could traumatize your pet and prevent it from allowing you to get the job done in the future.

It is important to clean your dogs ears every once in a while as well. Avoiding this will lead to wax and oil build up within the ears that can lead to infection or even hearing loss.

Keeping up with dental hygiene will also improve the overall health of your pet. Brushing your pet's teeth will reduce bad breath, lead to better overall health, decrease pain, increase longevity, and even reduce pet health care bills in the long run.

What are some of the standard grooming tools I should have?

Typical grooming tools that can come in handy for your dog include detangling spray, a fine comb, a wide-toothed, coarse metal comb, ear drops, ear and eye wipes, small scissors, dog toothbrush and toothpaste, nail clippers, and a soft slicker brush.

Typical grooming tools that can come in handy for your cat include a fine-toothed flea comb, soft brush, grooming mittens/gloves, nail clippers, and a wide-toothed comb for longer haired cats.

What if my pet does not handle grooming very well?

If you have a pet that doesn't react too well to brushing teeth, cleaning ears, bathing, brushing, or cutting nails, you don't have to worry about Astoria Grooming giving up on your pet. Unlike some other grooming businesses, we will not turn away any animal. Even if they are difficult in cooperating, we will make sure to make your pet feel comfortable and get the job done so your pet can stay looking its best. We handle dogs and cats of all breeds and all sizes. With 30 years of experience, we know strategies that will get the job done while ensuring that your pet is having a great time.
